It compresses into six more, and it is over the limit on the other 26, Delta, United, American and JetBlue among them.

What the half inch and the two inches actually cost you
The sizer every US major uses is 22x14x9". Length is fine at 21.75"; width is over by half an inch and depth by two. Our check gives a soft bag 1.5" of compression on its smallest side, which is why it still passes at Southwest, Spirit, Frontier, easyJet, British Airways and Iberia — all of which allow 10" of depth or more. Nothing recovers width against a 14" cage.
Owners say it goes in the bin. Both things are true.
Asked outright in r/onebag whether the 40L works as a carry-on, an owner of the 40L and 70L said the wheeled 40L fits the overhead bin. That does not contradict the measurements: a bin is far more forgiving than the cage at the gate, and a fabric duffel packed light does not bulge. It is enforcement, not compliance — fine until the day someone sizes it.
Where it is a genuinely bad idea
Ryanair and Wizz Air cap the cabin bag at 9" deep against this duffel's 11", and squeezing buys about 1.5". Same on Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian and most of the EU short-haul field. On a US major in Basic Economy, where the bag gets looked at anyway, treat it as a gate-check risk.
Check which Black Hole the praise is about
The line's reputation rests largely on the duffels without wheels — one commenter in that thread rates the plain 40L and 55L but has never used a wheeled one. This model is heavier at 7 lb 12 oz empty, and its wheel housing is what pushes it 2" past the standard sizer. Praise for a Black Hole duffel is not automatically praise for this one.
